Greg's Journey: Sharing the Joy of Skating with His Son

As a father and a long-time skater, Greg was thrilled when his son first expressed interest in skating.  It felt like his two worlds were coming together.  We asked him to tell us more about it.

1. When did you start to teach him how to skate?
Liam was always exposed to skating, I used to skate with him in my arms when he was just a few weeks old. His mum is a lifelong skater, and she really wanted him to skate from a young age. Then, I started taking him to the skate park after school.

2. What was it like teaching your son to skate?
After skating around the world, having my son take an interest in skating feels like I’ve completed a cycle. What matters most to me now is skating with him, much more than skating for myself.

3. What tips do you have for other parents?
For most kids, skating is all about having fun, so it’s important to keep it enjoyable. At the same time, showing them how much they’re improving is a great way to keep them motivated and excited to keep learning.

4. Liam doesn’t wear a brake in the video, is it not necessary?
The brake is great for getting started, and some people prefer to keep it permanently. However, I believe it’s beneficial to learn other braking methods, and it’s always better to start early. There’s nothing wrong with using the brake—it’s just that you gain more freedom of movement without it.

5. He practices three different disciplines in the video, do you plan on showing him more?
Of course, I show him what I practice myself because I have so much to teach him. What he needs most is simply to skate. Later, we’ll see if he becomes interested in other types of skating—there’s so much to explore - hockey, slalom, downhill, street.

6. How do you hope skating will shape your son’s childhood and future?
Skating has an incredible community, and I truly believe being part of it offers so many lifelong benefits. It’s not just about mastering the sport—it’s about building friendships that can last a lifetime.

For me, most of my closest friends today come from skating in one way or another. Choosing skating was, without a doubt, the best decision I’ve ever made, and I hope my son experiences the same.
